Across the Lonelist Highway

Nicknamed the Loneliest Road

U.S. Route 50 is a major east–west highway, connecting Ocean City, Maryland and West Sacramento, California. Stretching 3,000 miles, the route runs through mostly rural areas in the Western part of US. It includes the section through Nevada known as “The Loneliest Road in America”.

The Berlin–Ichthyosaur State Park is home to the most abundant concentration, and largest known remains, of Ichthyosaurs, an ancient marine reptile that swam in a warm ocean that covered central Nevada 225 million years ago. The fossils are protected and displayed at the park’s Fossil House.

Mysterious Reptiles of Ancient Seas
Ichthyosaurs were prehistoric marine reptiles that differed dramatically from all other reptiles.  Ranging in size from about two to over fifty feet in length, ichthyosaurs are the most highly specialized reptile ever to have lived on earth.  Very fish-like in appearance and locomotion, they bore their young alive and had amazingly large eyes in relation to the rest of the body.

The town of Berlin sprang up in 1896 when substantial gold veins were discovered nearby. In total, the Berlin Mine produced 42,000 troy ounces of gold, all removed from tunnels by hard rock mining techniques. The mine became unprofitable by 1911, and the town of Berlin became uninhabited shortly thereafter.

Stokes Castle is a three-story stone tower located just outside Austin, Nevada. It was built by Anson Phelps Stokes, a mine developer, railroad magnate, and banker. Intending the building as a summer home, Stokes built it in 1897.  The family traveled west in June 1897 with friends and spent about a month in the castle. They returned in the summer of 1898, sold their mine, the milling equipment, and the castle, and never returned to the town.

Friends George and Janine who were meeting us in Nathrop, Colorado spotted us ahead of them.
