Bishop, California

The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is a protected area high in the White Mountains. The Great Basin Bristlecone Pine trees grow between 9,800 and 11,000 feet above sea level, in very dry and low moisture conditions.

The snowy conditions prevented us from driving to the forest.  We set out on foot with fellow RVer's Dave and Kathy.

Unprepared for hiking in this much snow we decide to say good bye to Dave and Kathy and turn back at this point.

Deep Springs
This is definitely one of the most desolate roads we have ever driven.

Founded in 1917, Deep Springs College is a unique institution of higher learning. The educational program is built upon three pillars: academics, self-government, and manual labor. The school is located 40 miles from Bishop, California on an isolated cattle ranch in Deep Springs Valley.

Between 12 and 15 students are admitted each year. A scholarship covers the costs of tuition, room, and board for every student offered admission. In exchange, Deep Springs students are expected to dedicate themselves to lives of service to humanity.

Benton Crossing

What’s the 2nd longest Federal Highway in the USA?  US Route 6!  It is now 3,205 miles long. Before 1964, when California renumbered its roads and Route 6 extended all the way to Long Beach, Route 6 was the longest Federal Highway in the land – at 3,652 miles long. Now, driving US Route 6 will bring you though 14 states, and some of  the best small towns and cities in America.
