Canyonlands National Park
The Island In The Sky is a large plateau that sits high above the Green and Colorado Rivers. These two major rivers join together within the boundaries of Canyonlands and each river has carved a giant canyon through the sandstone. This is classic canyon country.
Merrimac & Monitor
These prominent land forms tower over 600 feet. They were named after Civil War ironclad ships.
Looking down onto Shafer Canyon - Can't wait to drive this one.
Mesa Arch
When we pulled into the parking lot at the Green River overlook we recognize a white Honda CRV. As we walked out to the overlook we spot Cliff & Betty. We had been camping neighbors in Leavenworth, Washington in July of 2013. As we say hi and start to reminisce a lady over hears our story and suggests that she take our picture together.
We exchanged contact information and laughed about where we might run into each other next time.
Arches National Park
The 40 mile scenic drive climbs high onto the plateau and crosses a vast landscape of panoramic views. Arches National Park is one of the top national parks in America. It’s a 73,234-acre wonderland of eroded sandstone fins, towers, ribs, gargoyles, hoodoos, balanced rocks and arches.
Arches National Park contains the world's largest concentration of natural sandstone arches.
Over 2,000 arches have been catalogued. Landscape Arch, measuring 306 fragile feet, is the second-longest span in the world.

Dead Horse Point State Park
Featuring a dramatic overlook of the Colorado River and Canyonlands National Park. The park covers 5,362 acres. Dead Horse Point State Park is one of Utah's most spectacular state parks
The park is so named because of its use as a natural corral by cowboys in the 19th century. The plateau is surrounded by sheer cliffs 2,000 feet high with only a narrow neck of land 30 yards wide connecting the mesa to the main plateau. Thus it was easy for cowboys to simply fence off this narrow neck, and keep rounded up wild horses from running away.
The legend of Dead Horse Point states that around the turn of the century the point was used as a corral for wild mustangs roaming the mesa top. Cowboys herded them across the narrow neck of land and onto the point. The neck was then fenced off with branches and brush. One time, for some unknown reason, horses were left corralled on the waterless point where they died of thirst within view of the Colorado River 2,000 feet below

Dinosaur Tracks
190 million years ago, dinosaurs crossed the dune fields leaving their tracks in the damp sand. These tracks were fossilized.
On the cliff above, the tracks of at least 10 different meat eating dinosaurs are preserved.

Dewey Bridge
Built in 1916 was the longest suspension bridge in Utah. The span of 500 feet was at the time of it's construction, the second longest span west of the Mississippi. Acting as the only Colorado River crossing on Route 128 until a new bridge was built in 1988.
The Bridge was refurbished in 2000. Then on April 6th, 2008 a 7 year old boy playing with matches at a nearby campground, started a brush fire, which spread for ten miles, engulfing the white planks of the newly refurbished bridge.
Dewey School site
Richard Westwood moved his family to Dewey permanently in 1904 to run the ferry. The Westwoods needed a school for their children. The first school (1904-1906) was in Wheeler's
log cabin. Mrs. Martha Westwood had to sign up for classes to make the necessary quota for a school. In 1906, Grand County built a school on this site. It was sixteen by twenty-four feet, made of native lumber, lined with unbleached muslin to keep the wind, dust and bugs out. Joe Scharf taught nine pupils for the three-month session. The ferry closed when the bridge was completed in 1916. Mr. Westwood lost his employment and moved his family to Moab. The school was closed, although the building stood for many years.

I could not find any information about this house someone carved and built into the side of the mountain.

On lookers from Canyonlands Island in the Sky.
We had just driven Long Canyon Trail a few days ago. After the rain the road washed out in a couple spots causing the trail to be closed.
