Flagstaff, Arizona

The Wupatki (wuh-POT-kee) Pueblo is located in the Wupatki National Monument near Flagstaff. Wupatki was an immense village that appears to have served as a ceremonial city and trading center for the surrounding area.

The many settlement sites scattered throughout the monument were built by the Ancient Pueblo People, more specifically the Cohonina, Kayenta, and Sinagua.  Wupatki, which means Long Cut House in the Hopi language, is a multistory pueblo dwelling comprising over 100 rooms.

A Community Room that resembles a roofless kiva.

A Ceremonial Ballcourt
Exactly what type of game did the Indians of Wupatki play in the ball court?
Unfortunately there is no definite answer. The people of Wupatki left no
written records and no petroglyphs or pictographs depicting the game.

This site also contains a geological blowhole, from which wind escapes from a cave system.

Wukoki Pueblo
This towering pueblo is built on a sandstone outcropping.

Hilltop Living
Citadel Pueblo once stood two stories high and had thirty or more rooms.

Compared to nearby pueblos this one has an abundance of black basalt, even though basalt boulders are more difficult to build with.

Citadel Sink, as seen from the top of Citadel Pueblo.  This large depression is still forming while nearby faults are gradually pulling apart.

The rooftop offers views of the surrounding landscape and once afforded opportunities for those living there to see and be seen from neighboring villages.

Lomaki Pueblo

The canyon rim elevation is 6,690 ft and the canyon's floor is 350 ft lower.  A mile long loop trail descends 185 ft into the canyon passing by 25 cliff dwelling rooms.
