Western Colorado's Grand Mesa is the world’s largest flat-top mountain, bursting with over 300 lakes sprawled across 500 square miles of striking terrain.

Land's End Observatory is an old ranger observatory on the edge of Colorado's highest mesa, the Grand Mesa, 10,500 feet above sea level. Built in 1936-37 the observatory reflects the rustic style found in buildings throughout the national parks and forests. While the observatory is no longer in use, it is still a popular place to visit and enjoy the views. Looking one direction, you can see the Book Cliffs and out into Utah. Looking the other direction, you can see the San Juan Mountains and the Uncompahgre Wilderness.

Land's End Road was once known as the Veterans' Road. When the Great Depression left many World War I veterans unemployed, President Roosevelt responded by opening the already created Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) to include them. Thus, between June 1933 and May 1934, the 200 veterans who were brought to Land's End camp completed 9.2 miles of road. They were paid a dollar a day for their work. They lived in army tents roughly eleven miles below the mesa rim while clearing the
brush for the road. Land's End Road descends as an all-gravel road from the observatory down to
U.S. Route 50.

This camp was occupied during the summer months from the 1930s until 1966 by the Raber family of Kannah Creek as part of their cattle ranching operation.

Collbran is, quite literally, at the end of the road — Hwy 330, that is. Incorporated in 1908 Collbran's downtown consists of little more than a handful of restaurants, plus a grocery and hardware store.

The American Servicewomen's Memorial was the first monument constructed in the US to honor servicewomen. Yes, in Collbran Colorado! The project was completed in 1976.

Wasn't expecting this

We ate here in 2019 and remembered how good their Green Chili Sauce was.  We had to come back.

After our hot hike we treated ourselves to peach ice cream

We were intrigued by the name "The Blowout".  The only information we could find were the coordinates.

It was just too hot to be out there so we turned back

We didn't want this to be us

The DeBeque Cutoff stretches between Highway 65 & I-70, north of the town of Mesa, and is quite scenic.
