About 30 million years ago, this area was in volcanic turmoil as a series of eruptions dramatically changed the landscape.

Gila Cliff Dwellings

Journey into Cliff Dweller Canyon and discover one of the most spectacular archeological  sites in this area. The one mile loop trail climbs 180 feet above the canyon floor.  It is steep and rocky in places.

Walking in the footsteps of the Mogollon (mo-go-yon) people who called this place home.

About 40 rooms built inside five natural caves here yields evidence that people traded both materials and ideas: macaw feathers probably from Mexico and T-shaped doorways like those found in other areas of the South-west and northern Mexico.

The Cliff Dwelling were built in these caves with rock, mortar, and timber felled between 1276 and 1287.  Evidence suggests they moved on around 1300.

Western New Mexico University Museum

The Museum housed in the Fleming Hall is home to the world’s largest collection of Mimbres and other Southwestern Cultural ceramics, artifacts, and culture.

Fleming Hall is a historic building on the campus of Western New Mexico University.  It was built in 1917 with a gymnasium on the 3rd or main floor and the science department below on the 2nd floor. While the Fleming Hall is beautiful building there were a few flaws with this design.  Having the basketball court above the classrooms was very disruptive and the only way to view the game was standing along the rail on the 4th floor.
