St. Marys River.
Once we had camp set up we grabbed our Passports and headed off for Canada.
Needed to stock up on Cheezies.
(Canada's version of Cheetos only much better)
We asked several people for restaurant recommendations and they all told us Italian.
Sharon overheard us asking in the grocery store and came up to us in the parking lot. Told us of her favorite Italian restaurant and offered to drive there and let us follow her. We thanked her but told her that wasn't necessary. Upon arriving at the restaurant we found out that she had already called to let them know we were coming.
The two cities are joined by the International Bridge
Back at the campground everyone was out watching the ships
We had a couple of rainy days
Shipping traffic in the Great Lakes system bypasses the rapids at St Marys Falls via the American Soo Locks, the world's busiest canal in terms of tonnage passing through it. Smaller recreational and tour boats use the Canadian Sault Ste. Marie Canal. The largest ships are 1,000 feet long by 105 feet wide. These are domestic carriers (called lakers). Too large to transit the Welland Canal that bypasses Niagara Falls, they are land-locked. Foreign ships (termed salties) are smaller and can exit the Great Lakes to the St. Lawrence River and the Atlantic Ocean.

Aune-Osborn Campground is a city park with a great view of St Marys River. Ships pass right in front of you headed to the Soo Locks. Water and electric with a dump station. 906 632-3268
ReplyDeleteAs we passed through Wisconsin we stayed at Madison KOA. Easy on and off the freeway. 608 846-4528 4859 County Road V, DeForest, WIGPS has problems with the actual address. Use address in book. We had stayed here before. They are very nice. A bit pricey.
ReplyDeleteWe would like to spend more time in the Upper Peninsula known as the U.P. or Yooper.
ReplyDeleteA few things we missed - Shipwreck Museum and Tower of History due to weather, Newberry the Moose Capitol of Michigan and Tahquamenon Falls. It might be on the cool side but we think fall would be pretty here. We should also check out jeepin trails.
Also Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore located near Munising. 40 miles of Lake Superior shoreline are found in this ruggedly beautiful park.
