The Capitol Dome was constructed of cast iron more than 150 years ago. The Dome has not undergone a complete restoration since 1959 and due to age and weather is now plagued by more than 1,000 cracks and deficiencies.  The Capitol recently began a multi-year project to repair these deficiencies, restoring the Dome to its original, inspiring splendor to ensure it can serve future generations.

The United States Botanic Garden is one of the oldest botanic gardens in North America.  More than 200 years ago, George Washington had a vision for the nation's capital city to include a botanic garden.  The Garden was established by Congress in 1820 and today has more than a million and a half visitors annually.

The "Fountain of Light and Water," commonly called the Bartholdi fountain, was created for the 1876 Philadelphia Exposition which celebrated the 100th birthday of the United States. It was designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi, who later created the Statue of Liberty.

When the exposition ended in 1877, Bartholdi did not find any buyers for his fountain. One year later it was purchased by the United States Congress, which offered him only six thousand dollars, half the sum he had originally asked.

Everything was going great until someone broke the toilet while he was cleaning it.  Good thing the weather is cool because the flusher is now stuck open.  Well nothings happening on Sunday.  So on Monday we called a repair facility in Richmond Virginia which is the direction we are headed next.  He offered us no suggestions of things we might try.  Told us there were no parts that could be replaced and we would need a new mechanism at the cost of $500.00.  Not liking the sound of that we got on line, brought up the Dometic manual and were able to trouble shoot a couple of things and find the error code.  With this information we called Dometic explained what happened and gave them the error code. They are now shipping us the part we need at a cost of $68.00.

In the mean time this is our temporary fix.

  1. DC had not really been on our itinerary but we found ourselves at a campground just 16 miles from the Metro. We decided to take a couple days to hit the highlights. We spent about 5 hours each day not including the Metro rides. Our sightseeing was done all on foot. We did not do any museums. Both days were cold and windy. We just wanted to get an overview to be more prepared for next time.
PS On Sunday a lot of things are closed.
